4DIAC integrates standards for communications & systems in smart grids

AIT case study

The Austrian Institute of Technology (AIT) is located in Vienna, Austria. It is Austria's largest non-university research institute, and among the European research institutes a specialist in the key infrastructure issues of the future. The AIT Energy Department develops solutions for a sustainable energy supply within its research fields of smart grids, photovoltaics, sustainable thermal energy systems, smart cities and regions, smart buildings as well as complex energy systems.

4DIAC technology Associated with energy supply the AIT Energy Department realised a smart grid laboratory to simulate the mains situation with solar inverters (65kW). It covers a standard compliant implementation of intelligent electronic devices in active power distribution networks (i.e., smart grids) and its validation.

Within this application 4DIAC collects the data generated by about 1.500 digital and 700 analogue IOs and transfers them to SCADA-BR through Powerlink and Modbus respectively. It integrates the IEC 61850 standard for communication networks and systems for power utility automation.
