Demonstrating the real-time capabilities of 4DIAC

ACIN case study

Vienna University of Technology - Automation and Control Institute (ACIN) performs research and education in the fields of distributed automation and control systems, as well as precision engineering, scientific instrumentation and process-measurement systems with focus on industrial relevant applications for industrial automation, production, and measurement systems.

Within a PHD thesis supervised by the ACIN the real-time capability of the 4DIAC-RTE and its online reconfigurability could be demonstrated.

The demonstrator hardware was an inverted pendulum controlled by an ATMEL ARM7 microcontroller with a Phytec Development Kit. The 4DIAC-RTE ran on top of eCOS real-time operating system. The inverted pendulum was controlled by a simple PID controller, which has been dynamically exchanged by a more complex state-space controller. The controller change has been performed without influencing the stabilised pendulum.
